Macau is a very small city congested with hotels, casinos, temples and historical landmarks. It is advised to not tour the city by any other means of transportation other than by use of your feet. Touring the city by foot is actually the best way to marvel at the “Las Vegas of the Orient”. One reason is that although Macau has a highly efficient traffic system, there are many one-way streets in the city which may in turn take a lot of a tourist’s time. Although cabs are significantly abundant in the city, one method that many do suggest is cycling in Macau.

Although touring the city on a bike is a pleasant experience, some cyclists will find Macau has too many vehicles and hills to enjoy cycling. However, the Taipa and Coloane Islands, which are two of the preserved old villages in Macau, can be very enjoyable for biking.

There are two distinct hills that remain suitable for cycling on the Taipa Island. One is the Taipa Grande and the other is Taipa Pequena. Both are circled with nature trails that provide great views of the Macau area. The Taipa Grande can be reached by a short paved road off the Estrada Colonel Nicolau de Mesquite. This can be found near the United Chinese Cemetery on the island. Found adjacent to the trail on the east side of the Taipa Grande is the Taipa Grande Nature Park. This can be found near the airport and can be a nice place to bike around as well.

The Taipa Pequena trail, on the other hand, can be accessed from the Estrada Lou Lim Ieoc, which is behind the Regency Hotel. There is also a smaller hill found on the west side of the Taipa Island that is less frequented by bikers. This particular hill has a paved road that circles around it, making it well suited for any kind of bike. The Taipa Grande has the larger and unpaved route among the two, making it a great adventure for mountain bikers.

The Coloane Island offers a rather more challenging endeavor when it comes to cycling in Macau. A large hilly area can be found right in the center of the island, which is crossed by many unpaved roads. This then offers mountain bikers a different level of biking challenge. This area is said to be the most popular place for mountain bikers as it tends to get crowed at times. An early start is advisable to avoid the crowds.

Bikes can be rented from three different locations: one is on the Taipa Island near the Tin Hua Temple, the other is from a kiosk near the bus station at the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History found inside the Taipa Village and the last is at the Rua Governador Tamagnini Barbosa at the Taipa Village. Leisure bikers will have a blast selecting their bikes although the more experienced ones won’t find the selection too good.

On a final note, more than the grand casinos, the routes when cycling in Macau can lead you to the most breathtaking natural beauty that Macau has to offer. The biking experience in Macau is then something not many people have the chance to see.
