Packing what to bring and what to wear to a vacation trip can either be a pleasant experience or a drag. One of the most hassling things is to realize that you brought all the wrong stuff for your trip. The key is to plan ahead, especially when going to Macau, which has four different seasons. Deciding on what to wear in Macau depends on, first and foremost, the season during which you plan to visit the city.

Based on American and European standards, Macau weather is not too cold. Temperatures on a typical cold winter day rarely drop below 13 degrees Celsius. This means that heavy coats, thick sweaters, wool scarves and gloves should be out of the picture. Sweaters will be needed during most days of the winter season with a light jacket or coat for the evenings.

Macau spring weather is undoubtedly full of rain. Some days can be wonderfully warm with clear blue skies but some can bring near-apocalyptic rainfalls that result to black rainstorm warnings. Anything waterproof is best advised as to avoid getting yourself and your things wet. Bring an umbrella when touring the city and you might as well bring a raincoat too to protect you from the rain.

The long summer months in Macau can get extremely hot and humid so clothes should be selected accordingly. Light and comfortable outfits made from cotton and silk are preferred especially when touring the city streets. Shorts, a t-shirt or polo shirt will be best during the day time but nighttime may require you to wear something more formal depending on your supposed place of visit for the night.

Autumn season in Macau has been deemed to be the best time to visit the city due to its pleasant weather conditions. Humidity is low while temperatures are warm with bright skies. T-shirts and shorts should be most appropriate for most of the season but it is advised to bring a sweater for the evenings, especially towards the end of the autumn season.

Macau is a city blessed with many extravagant hotels and pleasant eateries and cafes. Although it may be acceptable for some restaurants to accept guests in more casual attire, most expensive restaurants, clubs and casinos will expect you to wear something much more decent. A more formal dress code is required such as cotton trousers, an elegant polo shirt or maybe a dress for the ladies. A handful of high class establishments may still insist on a strict dress code such as a tie and suit for the men and an evening dress for the women. Although the dress codes in many Macau establishments have eased up during recent years, it’s still best to call your establishment of choice beforehand and ask about proper dress codes so you wouldn’t be caught under or over-dressed.

Macau’s hot weather makes it a perfect place to go swimming but swimsuits and bikinis are strictly for the beach and swimming pools use only. Wearing such swimming attire around the hotel-and most especially on city streets-is not common and not acceptable in Macau.
