Weather in Macau has a humid subtropical climate mainly due to the city’s location on the northern border of the tropical zone of the globe. Similar to Hong Kong, monsoons are typical in the entire region which leaves Macau weather with noticeable differences in humidity and temperatures all throughout the year. Macau has very high humidity levels which can reach anywhere between 75-90%. Despite its tropical climate, there are four seasons in Macau while its tropical monsoon climate is greatly influenced by its surrounding oceans. Because Macau is located along the coastal area of South China, precipitation averages at 2,030 mm per year with major rainfall occurring during the afternoons.
Spring Macau weather is mostly composed of moist and foggy conditions and elevated humidity levels. From the months of March to June, a transition period begins in Macau where the wind direction along the coastal district goes easterly to southeasterly which then increases the temperature and humidity levels of the region. During this transition stage, southeast and southwest winds coming from the Pacific and Indian Ocean are usually warm and moist while the north winds that come from Mongolia and Siberia bring dry and somewhat cold weather conditions. The spring season starts at around 20 degrees Celsius until it reaches about 30 degrees just in time for summer.
Commencing in May all through the month of September, the long summer season is typically hot, humid and wet in conditions. Locals walk around like they have just completed a marathon, especially during the mid afternoon sun. Average temperatures are at 22.7 degrees Celsius with the month of July being the warmest month. Hot weather is frequently coupled by heavy rain, thunderstorms and occasional typhoons. Summer in Macau should best be avoided to visit unless absolutely necessary.
Macau weather during autumn season is said to be the best time to visit the city, especially for outdoor activities and to tour around the city. During the short autumn months of September to October, conditions are usually dominated by warm and sunny days with clear skies and low humidity levels. Average temperatures are at 24 degrees Celsius. This is when the southwest monsoon begins to leave the region and the northeastern monsoon moves towards the south.
From November to February, the winter season of Macau is usually mildly sunny with wet and cold conditions. Although snow is unheard of in the city, frost does occur once or twice a year. Cold air from the northern Siberian region that passes by Southern China constantly breezes throughout the city. The coldest month of the year is usually during the month of January with average temperatures between 10-15 degrees Celsius.
Weather in Macau is famous for its unpredictability as rain can instantly turn into shine in a matter of seconds. The city is also host to some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions with weather warnings that range from extreme heat, direct hit typhoons, thunderstorms and landslides. Despite unpredictability, the city is still blessed with plenty of sunshine all throughout the year.
